GTA Online Casino Games Blocked in Australia Amid Gambling Crackdown

Australian Grand Theft Auto Online players have lost access to the Diamond Casino's gambling features, with Rockstar Games appearing to have quietly blocked the functionality in response to the Australian government's push against online gambling.

The restrictions were first flagged by players on Reddit and picked up by Vice. Affected users found themselves locked out of casino staples — three card poker, blackjack, roulette, and slots — all of which were introduced during the 2019 Diamond Casino & Resort update. Even the Lucky Wheel, which hands out free rewards like cars and clothing without requiring any chips, has been disabled for Australian accounts.

The block is notable because the casino operates entirely on fictional in-game chips, not real currency. While players can purchase chips using real money through microtransactions, there is no mechanism to cash them out for actual funds. That distinction hasn't mattered to Australian regulators, apparently. According to GameSpot, leaker Tex2 confirmed the change is code-level, not a coincidence — Rockstar deliberately updated the game to geofence gambling content for the region.

Australia joins a number of other countries that have already had GTA Online's casino features restricted. The ongoing global conversation around loot boxes and simulated gambling in games has pushed several governments to scrutinize mechanics that blur the line between entertainment and wagering, even when real-money payouts aren't possible.
